Andrea Galarza Bio
I suppose it would come as no small surprise that a child’s love for reading would spawn a love for writing. I practically live with my nose in a book at all times and remember, quite clearly, begging my mom for money every week to go down to the local book store. There’s nothing like the smell and feel of a new book promising a new adventure.
I wrote (and awkwardly self illustrated) my first children’s book when I was eleven years old. I still have the tattered, yellow cloth and ribbon bound book that has been read to nieces and nephews, and now my own children, who say, hopefully honestly, that it’s their favourite! Two short stories won first and second place at the local fall fair, and essays received praise from high school teachers.
I used to envy my sister, and others, who had a talent such as painting or singing, and felt that I was sorely lacking. When I won the literary award at my grade 8 graduation, it still didn’t sink in that perhaps I did have a talent.
My personal choice for literary entertainment spans from science-fiction and fantasy (Dean Koontz, Stephen King, Sheri S. Tepper, J.K. Rowling and J.R.R. Tolkien) to literary fiction (Harper Lee, Ursula Hegi, Khaled Hosseini) and, of course, Shakespeare!
I finally made the decision to take the leap into writing my own novel and finished a creative writing course at Sheridan College. Through that fantastic experience, I was able to hook up with this cool bunch of aspiring writers. I have read their work, and believe me, they are all just as good as any novel you’ll find on a bookstore shelf (or on-line in this new day and age!).
My first, as yet untitled but almost complete, attempt incorporates my love for reading with my other passion; music. Inspired by the Billy Talent song, “Surrender”, it tells the story of a group of teenaged kids dreaming of making it big in the music business. Spanning eight years, from high school in 1993 to signing a record contract, we follow the trials and tribulations of a rock band, infused with a love story. After all, we can all live a little vicariously through teenage and rock star life every now and again, can’t we?
Raised in the small town of Koletta, Ontario, Josh Brown goes about his business as an average seventeen-year-old high school student. Focused on his rock band, his planned out world is taken for a loop when venturesome Savine Halston moves to town. She is a beautiful distraction, especially when she auditions and joins his band. In Josh, Savine has found a confidante and finally someone she can trust. They unexpectedly form a close friendship, although, Josh has actually fallen in love. He endures personal turmoil in trying to balance their friendship and yet keeping his feelings a secret.
Years later, the band is confronted with infidelity, betrayal, drug abuse, physical illness and yet, must deal with the added pressure of increasing fame. Can Josh remain grounded, or will he get caught up in the hype of the music business? This is a journey of following your dreams, learning to be true to yourself and challenging vulnerability. Because, as Josh finds out, time waits for no one.
